MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ A bipartisan group of current and former Wisconsin lawmakers are trying to drum up support for a bill that would revamp how the state draws political boundaries.

Republican state Sen. Dale Schultz and Democratic Sen. Tim Cullen held a news conference Tuesday to promote a bill that would require the Legislative Reference Bureau to draw the boundaries rather than the Legislature. Former Republican Rep. Dave Martin and former longtime Republican political strategist Bill Kraus joined them. They all argued allowing legislators to draw boundaries leads to gerrymandering.

The bill looks doomed. Lawmakers from both parties have been unwilling to give up their authority to draw the lines. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, a Juneau Republican, said Tuesday he has no interest in turning the responsibility over to the LRB.
