Capitol's first floor doors re-open

MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ The first floor doors of the Wisconsin state Capitol have re-opened after being closed for the past 12 years as a security measure following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The state Department of Administration announced Monday that the doors were reopened. Secretary Mike Huebsch called it ``both a literal and symbolic gesture'' to show that the Capitol is open and government is transparent.

Gov. Scott Walker's administration was harshly criticized during the 2011 union protests for limiting access to the Capitol, including closing entrances and temporarily installing metal detectors.

The newly opened entrances are at the top of stairs on four sides of the Capitol. The stairs are frequently the site of pictures for wedding parties and other events, but the doors have been locked for more than 12 years.
