Madison Police arrested a suspected thief after officers say he ran away from the East Towne Mall and climbed onto the roof of a nearby Chili's.

Loss Prevention officers from Sears tried to stop the man Friday afternoon. They backed off when they saw the man reach for a brown handle in his bag.

As the suspect ran, he dropped more than $400 worth of tools stolen from Sears.

Witnesses told police the man had gotten into a dumpster outside of the Chili's, then they could see him on the rooftop.

Diners inside were told to stay indoors as officers handled the situation.

The man came down, and police discovered the handle in the bag turned out to be attached to an ax. It did look like a gun grip.
