On May 4th, 2014 at approximately 6:47 p.m., officers from the Fitchburg Police Department responded to the intersection of McCoy Road and Herman Road for a two vehicle traffic crash. The preliminary investigation found that a vehicle traveling westbound on McCoy Road, driven by a 27 year old Fitchburg man, crossed the median separating the eastbound and westbound lanes of McCoy Road, and struck a vehicle traveling eastbound on McCoy Road. The driver of the vehicle that crossed the median was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident is still under investigation. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation. Eastbound and westbound McCoy Road between Highway 14 and Syene Road remains closed while the investigation continues. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
