Federal grants to provide aid for at-risk youth

Posted August 6th, 2014 @ 2:46pm by Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Wisconsin and Minnesota have received federal grants to help provide academic and work-skills training for at-risk youth.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced the YouthBuild grants Wednesday. Wisconsin is getting a total of $3.5 million to support four programs, and a St. Paul group is getting $768,000.

YouthBuild is an alternative-education program that provides classroom instruction and work-skills training. Services are available to people ages 16 to 24 who have been in the juvenile justice system, are aging out of foster care or have dropped out of high school.

The programs allow them to work toward high school diplomas and other milestones.
