MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says Wisconsin should not be considered a site to temporarily house unaccompanied immigrant children who are crossing the U.S. border.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Vos wrote to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on Thursday. The letter also was signed by Republican Assembly members John Nygren of Marinette, Joel Kleefisch of Oconomowoc and David Craig of Big Bend
The lawmakers say it would be in the children's best interests if they were relocated near the U.S. southern border, so families can be promptly reunited.
The federal office that helps refugees settle in the U.S. has placed 50 unaccompanied children in Wisconsin.
Immigration officials have been overwhelmed by tens of thousands of unaccompanied children fleeing from gang violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
