A unanimous vote by the Madison City Council Tuesday night on a plan to build tiny houses for the homeless.Occupy Madison is behind the effort to put up 9, small units on East Johnson Street. Supporters of the plan outweighed opponents who turned out to speak .
Occupy's plans call for expanding an existing repair garage into it's headquarters and construction of the tiny houses in two former auto repair bays, at 2046-50 East Johnson St. The houses are 98 sq ft and are on wheels.
Critics say the houses won't meet building codes, and lack foundations, plumbing and sanitary connections. Supporters say a tiny roof is better than no roof, and if the process doesn't work, the city has mechanisms in place to undo it.
