Get ready for some sticker shock when utility bills come out at the end of the month. Steve Schultz of Madison Gas and Electric says for the average customer, natural gas costs for the month should be up 25 to 30 compared to January of last year.

Schultz says in the utility’s 125 year history, eight of the top ten days for highest use of natural gas, have been during this month. He says customers can help ease the bite of the costs by adjusting their thermostats or getting on a budget plan to spread out the payments. Officials at Alliant say they too saw record usage, specifically on January 6th.
