MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. (AP) _ Rep. James Sensenbrenner says he plans to run for a 19th term next year, in the southeastern Wisconsin district he's represented since 1978.

The Republican congressman announced his candidacy for re-election in a statement Tuesday. The 70-year-old says he's proud of his record and he wants to keep representing the people of the 5th District.

Sensenbrenner is a member of the House Judiciary Committee. He was the chief architect of the 2001 USA Patriot Act, which expanded government surveillance powers, but he recently said the National Security Agency is exceeding its scope. He says he wants the NSA's powers scaled back.

Sensenbrenner won last year's election with 91 percent of the vote.

The 5th District covers Jefferson and Washington counties, along with parts of Dodge, Milwaukee, Walworth and Waukesha counties.
