UW Police looking into rash of bike thefts

Posted April 30th, 2014 @ 7:09am by Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ University of Wisconsin-Madison Police are investigating a rash of bike thefts on campus.

Police spokesman Marc Lovicott says officers had investigated 21 thefts as of Monday. That's nearly double the 11 thefts reported to the department as of the same time last year.

Lovicott says thieves are targeting high-end bicycles worth upward of $2,000. Many of the bikes weren't locked up or were locked with cheap cable locks that thieves can slice through in seconds.

Police are trying to combat the thefts by placing so-called bait bikes around campus. Police can track those bikes' locations in real time, leading them to thieves.
