Wis. Legislator Decides to Call it Quits

MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ A Wisconsin state senator says he won't run for re-election next year.

Janesville Democrat Tim Cullen said at a news conference Thursday he wants to focus on foundations he's created that help high school students find internships in the Legislature and help minority students become teachers. He also says he wants to work with nonprofits.

He says he can accomplish more as a private citizen than in the Legislature, where he says lawmakers refuse to compromise and party leaders control everything.

Cullen served in the Senate from 1974 to 1987. He elected again in 2010 and was among 14 Senate Democrats who fled the state the following year in a futile attempt to prevent a vote on Republican Gov. Scott Walker's plan to strip public workers of their union rights.
