WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) _ A Wisconsin college is developing a program that will allow high school graduates to take off some time before college to do service work and earn credit for it.

The program is modeled on the ``gap year'' that European students usually take between high school and college to travel and pursue personal interests. The idea is that by taking some time off, students will be more focused on their studies when they return to school.

Daily Herald Media reports (http://wdhne.ws/1buHkwm ) that St. Norbert College in De Pere aims to become one of the few colleges in the United States offering a formal gap period program.

Incoming freshmen will spend a semester taking leadership courses and then volunteering with service organizations in the U.S. and other countries.
