1 man killed, another injured in early morning shooting and crash

UpdateTwo men were seated in a car at the Mobil gas station, 3019 E. Washington Ave., when a gunman approached on foot. The shooter fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, with several bullets striking the driver. The wounded man accelerated out of the lot at a high rate of speed, heading east on East Washington Ave. The car ended up striking the Comfort Inn & Suites hotel, 4822 E. Washington Ave. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, while his passenger suffered non life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was not shot, and was taken to a hospital. As for the driver, it will be up to the Dane County Medical Examiner to establish cause and manner of death, but preliminary indications are gunshot wounds caused his death. The MPD's Violent Crime Unit is leading the investigation. Early information suggests this was a targeted act of violence, although a specific motive is not yet known. There is nothing to link the shooting to other recent gun incidents at the moment. However, the investigation is in its early stages.
