House fire in Shullsburg claims life

Authorities say a house fire in Shullsburg claimed a life Wednesday.Officials say the fire at 210 Victor Street broke out just past two a.m.  They say in addition to the fatal victim, four others were hospitalized as a result of the fire.Authorities in Lafayette County have yet to identify the victim, but friends and acquaintances tell 27 News he is a 56-year old Shullsburg man.Shullsburg Police Chief Josh Jerry says the fire's cause is being treated as suspicious, as local, state and federal investigators probe what happened.

Neighbor Darcy Ackerson says survivors huddled on a driveway, full of emotion.  "Devastated,"  Ackerson describes their mood.  "They were very, very devastated.""One woman says she was sleeping on the couch,"  neighbor Richard Heim says.  "She woke up to all the smoke and everything."Available Lafayette County records show the couple who own the home have been there well over a decade.
