Tragedy hits the small village of Dane -- after a body is found at a local lake.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office said the body was found around 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lake Melvin Park.
“About 10:30 this morning, a body was found in the Lake Melvin area where we did have a report of a missing person a few days ago,” said Dane County Sheriff's office spokesperson Elise Schaffer.
Investigators searched that location because that's where the missing woman was last seen.
“When the report came in on Saturday to the Village of Dane police, they were alerted to someone that was camping in the park. When they went down to investigate, they did find a small campsite, but no one around,” Schaffer said. “And that’s when they begin searching, That’s when they enlisted the help of the Sheriffs Office. And the search has been going on throughout the weekend.”
Debra Acker, who works at a nearby store, said the missing woman's brother came into the store asking about her over the weekend.
“He wanted to know if I had seen her come into the store. And I told him I had not, but I would keep an eye out,” Acker said.
Authorities are asking for the public's help solving the case.
“We would certainly be looking to hear from anybody that lives in that area that may have seen something in the last few days that they might think could be connected to this,” Schaffer said.
“If they have information, we certainly want them to call our tip line or call Madison area Crimestoppers. We’d like to be able to put together the pieces of this puzzle and make sure we have all the information that we can get,” she said.
But it's a shocking blow to Acker -- who has lived in the Village of Dane her entire life.
“It just doesn't happen in this town other than the murder of Father Kunz, which was another surprise. Things like this just don't happen in this town.”
Authorities would not say if they believe foul play was involved. Right now they're considering the case a death investigation.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office said its not clear if the body found at the lake is related to the search for Marisa Dahms.
