Madison's city council fails to override mayoral veto

Liquor Store

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison's city council came up short in its attempt to override a veto by Mayor Paul Soglin.

The mayor took that action against a proposal that would have allowed stores to sell liquor and beer online, and then deliver it to customers in the parking lot. Two stores had applied for licenses for the online sales -- the Pick'n Save on Junction Road and the Walmart on the city's east side.

The council needed 14 votes, but only got to 12. Four city alders were either absent or excused from the vote.
