Walmart declines to donate former Sam's Club to Boys & Girls Club

MADISON (WKOW) -- A local group's hope to turn a vacant Sam's Club building on Madison's west side into a youth sports complex likely won't happen.

Shortly after Walmart abruptly closed the Sam's Club in January, Boys and Girls Club Michael Johnson mailed a letter to Walmart asking them to donate the building. His proposal gained support form city leaders as well.

However Johnson learned this week that Walmart declined to donate the building.

In a post to his Facebook page, Johnson said that he had received a response from Walmart and that they would not donate the building, but would consider an offer to purchase it.

"If the B&GC is interested in making an offer to purchase the Madison facility, we will take that offer under careful consideration," Walmart wrote.

"I will share details later. I tried you all, Johnson wrote.
