Burglar enters unlocked homes overnight in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) — A burglar targeted at least two homes on Madison’s west side early Friday morning, according to the Madison Police Department.

The MPD’s Burglary Crime Unit is now investigating the crimes they said were likely committed by the same suspect or suspects.

A homeowner called 911 after hearing someone in the kitchen of her home on Meadow Sweet Drive at about 1:30 a.m. Police said the intruder got in through an open garage. A number of items, including a purse, were taken.

When police responded, they searched the area with a K-9 and found backpacks, credit cards, a school ID, among other things, on a bike path near Copper Leaf Trail. Some of the items were connected to the Meadow Sweet Drive break-in, others were from a home on Starr Grass Drive.

Officers went to the address on Starr Grass Drive and woke up the family inside the home. The residents didn’t realize a burglary had occurred. The family found the suspect entered through an unlocked patio door. That person stole several backpacks- one with a laptop inside.

The Madison Police Department is reminding everyone to lock homes and cars at all times.
