Man injured in garage explosion worked with 'fireworks materials’

MIDDLETON (WKOW) — Middleton police said Thursday that the man injured in Tuesday’s explosion is the person who caused it.

“The preliminary investigation into this incident indicates that the explosion was caused by the 45-year-old male who was working with fireworks materials in the garage. The investigation continues and no arrests have been made at this time,” police said.

Middleton police said the explosion injured the man inside the detached garage Tuesday night on South Avenue.

The roommate of the victim said the man is immersed in science and experimentation, but is careful about his work.

The man is listed in fair condition at UW Hospital.

Emergency responders evacuated several nearby homes and blocked off streets for hours.

Captain Jeremy Greiszler said members of Dane County’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit checked the home and surrounding area, and determined there was no additional explosive threat.

Police encourage anyone with information related to the explosion to call or text the Middleton Police Department at (608) 824-7300.
