Medical examiner identifies man shot and killed Sunday by Madison police

The man shot and killed by police during a confrontation Sunday has been identified as Dean G. Thomas, 64, of Madison.

Madison police responded about 9:45 p.m. Sunday to the 6500 block of Raymond Road for reports of a person outside firing a gun.

According to Chief Vic Wahl, officers arrived to find Thomas armed with a handgun. Wahl says Thomas fired a shot at the officers, at which point an officer returned fire, hitting Thomas. Life-saving measures were performed on the scene, and he was taken to the hospital, where he died.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation will be handling the investigation.

This is the first shooting by police in Madison in 2019.
