Evers sends letter to Trump administration opposing Hmong deportations NEW

In a letter sent Thursday, Gov. Tony Evers urged Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to reconsider any policy which might result in the deportation of any of Wisconsin's Hmong population.

"Many Hmong people living in Wisconsin came here as refugees seeking asylum," the governor wrote.

Evers said Hmong and Loa residents feared going back to their home country because it is known for a "history of human rights abuses."

The governor said the Badger State is home to a fifth of all Hmong people living in the United States. "They have long been an important part of Wisconsin’s fabric and economy."
