11-year-old girl shot during midday gunfire in Madison

Acting Madison Police Chief Vic Wahl on Tuesday said an 11-year-old girl was shot while riding in a car today on East Washington Avenue.

Wahl said the girl was shot in the head and is currently hospitalized with life threatening injuries.

Wahl said the driver of the car was the intended target. The driver has a family connection to one of the girl's parents, Wahl said, and was watching her at the time.

The girl was hit by gunfire near Lexington Avenue when the shooting took place, police believe.

There appear to be several locations where shots were fired, all connected to the case.

Besides the gunshot victim, a home, and an uninvolved vehicle were hit by bullets, police said.

MPD's Violent Crime Unit has the lead in the case. There have been no arrests.
