Arson charges against former Madison man over car fires downtown

A former Madison man is charged with two felony counts of arson and other crimes, after two cars in downtown Madison were set on fire last month.24-year old Darryn Taylor of Whitmore Lake, Michigan remains free on $3,000 bail, after a Monday Dane County court appearance. 

A criminal complaint against Taylor states surveillance video around the time of the early morning, Feb. 15 fires near South Bedford and West Main Streets shows Taylor in the area, and using lighter fluid to set the fires that consumed two, Chevy sedans.

Taylor also faces a felony charge for possession of narcotics, and misdemeanor charges connected to his alleged pointing of a gun at a woman, and pushing a friend against the wall of a Madison bar.The complaint states one of Taylor's former Madison roommates said when he and Taylor traveled to Michigan and partied with Taylor's former Western Michigan University fraternity brothers, Taylor indicated he set the fires. 

" 'Set something on fire in Kalamazoo it's no big deal,' " the complaint quotes Taylor as saying in front of his roommate.  " 'In Madison they go crazy.' " 

In a promotional video for Western Michigan, Taylor appears and states he was poised to graduate from the university with honors.

Taylor could return to Madison, as a court commissioner removed a no-contact order for Taylor with his roommates.No motive for the fire-setting is stated by investigators.Taylor and his attorney declined comment to a 27 News reporter as they left the Dane County courthouse Monday.
