Louisiana racer dies in crash at Beaver Dam Raceway

UPDATE (WKOW) -- The entire racing community is feeling the loss of driver Jason Johnson according to a spokeswoman with World of Outlaws.

Forty-one year old Johnson died following a crash in a World of Outlaws race at Beaver Dam Raceway Saturday. He was battling for the lead during Lap 18 of the Jim Boyd Memorial.

According to the Cristina Cordova, the executive director of digital communications for World of Outlaws, he starting driving in their Sprint Car Series a few years ago but had been racing for decades.

She said the race followed their typical format and rules and she said World of Outlaws hasn't seen a death in one of their races in several years.

"I understand that racing is dangerous and people do get injured but fatalities are never the norm and we do everything in our power to ensure that doesn't happen," Cordova said.

She said police are not investigating but World of Outlaws is looking into the crash to find out what happened and what they can do to keep it from happening again.

Johnson leaves behind a wife, Bobbi, and a five-year-old son, Jaxx.
