Town of Dane murder victim identified

Authorities have identified the man who was murdered in a town of Dane home earlier this week.

Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office says Dalton David Ziegler, 24, was killed. The cause of his death is still undetermined at this time. The office is continuing to do additional testing.

Late Tuesday night, sheriff’s officials announced three arrests in Ziegler’s death. The suspects each face a charge of felony murder — party to a crime.

Investigators believe Ziegler was killed after a fight between a group of people in Ziegler’s home sometime overnight Monday into Tuesday. He was seen at a bar Monday evening and an acquaintance told 27 News nothing happened to suggest later violence.

TOWN OF DANE (WKOW) — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide in the town of Dane.

It happened at a home on Highway 113 near Lodi. Authorities say deputies responded to the home just before 4:30 a.m.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney says there was a small group of people at a home in Dane. At least a couple of others arrived to join them. A fight broke out and the sheriff says the victim, who we have learned is a 24-year old Dane resident, was critically hurt and left there, alone.

“At some point, one of the attendees had called for a ride from friends and upon the arrival of these others they entered the residence where a physical confrontation occurred between the deceased and several of those who had just arrived,” Mahoney said at a news conference.

Authorities say one person did return and make a report of a unresponsive person just before 5 a.m. Tuesday. But for responding deputies, the situation they were dealing with turned into a homicide investigation. Items were taken out of a red sedan on the property.

An acquaintance of the victim says he was at her bar in Dane, until just before 11 p.m. Monday, with another man. She says nothing happened to suggest later violence and it’s difficult to believe he’s gone.

“He was a good guy, he was friendly to everybody, never caused any problems, usually was by himself, knew everybody in the bar, so he didn’t need to be with people because he usually knew everybody who was in here. Always just a happy person,” said Jody Thayer, who knew the victim.

Sheriff Mahoney offers no information on what may have sparked the deadly fight.

The sheriff says all the people at the Dane home, the crime scene, are being interviewed, but no arrests have been made at this time.

27 News has learned the victim has worked as a mechanic and truck driver. Online court records show the victim has committed no crimes in the past.
