Jeff Stanley, owner of iconic Madison restaurant, has died

MADISON (WKOW) — The founder of a popular Madison restaurant has died.

Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry says Jeff Stanley passed away on Saturday.

Stanley started the restaurant famous for its burgers in 1974 on Monroe Street. Dotty’s relocated to the Camp Randall area in 1976 and Fairchild Street in 1990, until the current Overture Center was built. It moved to its current home on N. Frances Street in 2003.

The name Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry started when Stanley opened a gift shop in Des Moines in 1969, but his interest turned from jewelry and clothing to hamburgers.

The restaurant made the announcement about Stanley’s death in a Facebook post on Sunday, saying he will always be cherished, loved and remembered as the Hamburger King in Madison.
