Ambulance catches fire in Sauk County

UPDATE (WKOW) — Sauk County emergency crews were able to remove a patient from an ambulance just before the vehicle went up in flames Sunday evening, according to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Department said at about 6:30 p.m. a call came in, reporting an ambulance was running in emergency mode with flames underneath on Highway 12 near Baraboo.

The ambulance pulled over to the side of Highway 12 near the bottom of Sauk Hill. When deputies arrived the vehicle was still on fire and the ambulance crew was in the process of removing occupants. Shortly after getting everyone out, the ambulance went up in flames.

An ambulance from Sauk Prairie EMS took the patient to the hospital. Another ambulance had to respond because someone suffered from smoke inhalation during the fire.

Southbound lanes of Highway 12 were shut down for about two hours while crews responded to the ambulance fire Sunday evening.
