Madison school district cuts ties with substitute who used racial slur

MADISON (WKOW) — The Madison Metropolitan School District has cut ties with a substitute teacher who they say used a racial slur in front of a student.

In a message sent to parents Tuesday, Madison West High School principal Karen Boran said the incident was brought to the the attention of administrators this week.

It involved a  substitute teacher using an inappropriate racial slur in the presence of a student, according to Boran.

After completing its investigation, the substitute teacher will not be teaching at West or in this district again, Boran said.

“No matter the context or the circumstance, the use of racial slurs is unacceptable in our schools and throughout our community. It does not represent who we are at West or in MMSD and will not be tolerated,” Boran said in the note to parents.

“As a school team, we will continue to be unapologetic in our work to combat racism, and we will call out issues when we see them. I know that we are all on that journey together and we will need to support one another so that we can create the environment our students deserve.”
