Douglas County DA declines to file additional charges in Closs case

The Douglas County District Attorney said he does not anticipate he will file charges today against Jake Patterson in the kidding of Jayme Closs and the murder of her parents.

Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf  said in a statement Friday he “does not anticipate filing a criminal complaint” against Jayme Closs’ alleged kidnapper, “in the immediate future.”

Fruehauf said prosecutors must weigh “multiple factors” when deciding to bring charges. “Including the existence of other charges and victim-related concerns,” said Fruehauf.

Patterson, 21, of Barron was arrested earlier this month and is facing two charges of first-degree intentional homicide and one for kidnapping after Closs escaped and named Patterson as the man who took her and murdered her parents in October.

Fruehauf did leave the door open for filing charges in the future saying, “the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office does retain the ability to charge Patterson at any time within the statute of limitations for any crime it determines Patterson has committed.”

“The matter remains under review,” Fruehauf said.
