Another icy mess tonight & Thursday

MADISON (WKOW) — Our next weather-maker will arrive tonight, and it’s a complex one. A Winter Weather Advisory resumes at 6 pm this evening.

Look for generally light freezing rain to develop later this evening, possibly mixed with some sleet. Areas well to the NW of Dane County will likely be cold enough to support light snow.

After a brief lull toward daybreak, a more substantial slug of moisture will quickly overspread Southern Wisconsin. Different areas will see different types of precipitation on Thursday.

MORNING

  • SE sections are likely to see mainly rain.
  • Central sections, including Madison, should receive a mix of freezing rain and sleet.
  • NW sections are expected to see mainly snow and sleet.

AFTERNOON

As colder air gets pulled into the system, any rain or mixed showers will gradually change to snow from west to east. Snow showers should quickly come to an end by mid-evening.

TOTALS

  • Areas NW of Dane County can expect 1-3″ of snow/sleet by Thursday evening.
  • Up to 1/4″ of ice possible elsewhere by Thursday evening. A likely period of rain SE of Dane County on Thursday may limit ice accumulation to 1/10″ or less.

It’ll turn much colder on Friday and Saturday, followed by more snow chances starting on Sunday.
