MADISON (WKOW) – Hope you kept the shovels handy, you’ll need them again on Wednesday.
TODAY
High pressure loses its grip over the Great Lakes today allowing for increasing clouds, especially by late in the day. Temps will be a bit below average, but still pleasant in the mid 20s with virtually no wind.
WEDNESDAY
An area of low pressure will move in from the Central Plains bringing region-wide snow overnight, starting around 2-3 am. Periods of snow will continue through the morning commute and a breeze will pick up, causing some minor blowing snow.
To complicate matters, snow may mix with or change over to freezing rain in the afternoon, especially for areas SE of Madison.
SNOW TOTALS
There is still some uncertainty with this system and how much snow we’ll receive. If it moves farther south, expect higher snow totals, and less of a freezing rain threat. If the low moves north of its current forecast track, freezing rain may become an issue for more of our area.
As of now, your 27 Storm Track team is forecasting 3-5 inches of snow formost of the area, with 1-3 inches SE of Dane County, where freezing rain is more likely to mix in. That being said, places like Janesville, Fort Atkinson, and Whitewater will likely be on the high end of this range (closer to three inches). Highest amounts will be W&NW of Madison, with isolated six inch totals possible in the Far NW.
IMPACTS
Expect difficult travel conditions for the morning commute and through the rest of the day. All roads will be slippery with snow, but there could be some icy stretches (especially SE) as freezing rain mixes in for the afternoon and evening.
