Supervisor charged in child porn case resigns

A Sauk County board supervisor facing charges in a child pornography case has resigned his position.

Sauk County officials tell 27 News William Wenzel resigned Wednesday, the same day he appeared in court on five counts of possession of child pornography.

The board will now appoint a temporary supervisor to take his place. There could be a special election held at some point to find a permanent replacement.

PRAIRIE DU SAC (WKOW) — A Sauk County Board supervisor facing five felony counts of possession of child pornography appeared in court today where a judge ordered a $5,000 appearance bond.

According to a criminal complaint, child pornography was discovered on a computer in the home of Sauk County Board District 29 Supervisor William F. Wenzel.

Wenzel faces 25 years in prison on each of the five charges, in addition to a fine of no more than $100,000.

Wenzel also was prohibited from unsupervised contact with minors and no internet use not related to work or communication with his attorney.

The judge found probably cause to proceed, and Wenzel waived the statutory time limit to have a preliminary hearing.

He was booked following his court appearance.
