UPDATE (WKOW) — The Town Madison Fire Department estimates the fire at the Parker Place apartments caused about $40,000 in damage.
The department responded at 4:16 p.m. Chief David Bloom said the fire originated in one unit in the bedroom and caused smoke and heat damage to the two units on both sides of the fire. The chief said quick thinking from those inside prevented even more damage.
“The residents were home and had enough fire safety knowledge to close the door on the fire bedroom and it slowed the fire down quite a bit,” Bloom said.
Flames were shooting out the back window, close to nearby power lines. Firefighters were able to put out the flames in 14 minutes but MG&E had to come out to take care of damage to the power lines.
“They pulled the meters on the fire buildings cause we got wires compromised by the fire,” Bloom said.
The fire displaced three adults and nine children. Red Cross was called and everyone was provided housing and meals.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
