Federal authorities say that Brian Rini has been charged with making false statements to federal agents in claiming that he was missing Aurora child Timmothy Pitzen.
Rini is being held without bond following a federal court appearance Friday morning.
Authorities say the quickly became skeptical Wednesday that Rini was the missing 14-year-old as he had claimed.
By Thursday, DNA analysis ruled out Pitzen, and further investigation determined the man was Rini.
Rini later told agents he learned about the case by watching the TV news magazine 20/20 on ABC, when a rerun of the case ran several weeks ago.
