Change in plans to Essen Haus development project

MADISON (WKOW) — Developers still plan to knock down the Essen Haus restaurant and renovate Come Back Inn, but now four houses in the 100-block of S Blair St. are going to stay as is.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports, Essen Haus and a small adjacent building that’s not in good shape are going to be turned into a five-story residential and commercial building. There will also be parking added.

A decision was made not to include nearby houses, in response to reaction from community members. That will downsize the amount of apartments and square footage of commercial space for the overall project.

McGrath Property Group, the company behind the redevelopment, will be presenting plans to Madison’s Landmark Commission on Monday and the Urban Design Commission on Wednesday. Those groups need to review the project.
