MADISON (WKOW) — Madison Metro School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham plans to resign this week,The Isthmus reportedTuesday night.
Cheatham has led the district since 2013, when she left a position with Chicago Public Schools to work in Madison. Cheatham replaced Dan Nerad, who served as superintendent for four years.
Earlier this year, an incident at Whitehorse Middle School prompted Cheatham to send a letter to the Madison community stating, “there was a failure on our part.”
Cheatham’s letter also acknowledged the use of several racial slurs by Madison educators. “The series of racial slur incidents that have occurred this school year and caused harm to Black students, their families, and our community are indefensible.”
The district has also dealt with multiple sexual assault incidents during this school year. Both allegedly happening at La Follette High School, one in January, and another in February.
The formal announcement will come during a press conference Wednesday, according to Isthmus.
