Madison Metropolitan School District names interim superintendent

MADISON (WKOW) — The Madison Metropolitan School District’s Board of Education named an interim superintendent to fill the position in the 2019-’20 school year.

Dr. Jane Belmore, formerly a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the district, will serve as the interim chief administrator following the departure of Jennifer Cheatham fora new position at Harvard, according to a press release from the School District (MMSD).

“I am honored to be selected for this role, and I am energized to support the district’s staff, students and families this school year,” Belmore said. “Madison schools have a strong vision and core values in place, and I look forward to working with the board to move this work forward.”

Belmore’s contract will be finalized at Monday’s board meeting, MMSD said. The district emphasized that Belmore and Cheatham will work together over the summer “to ensure a smooth transition and strong start to the school year.”

“Dr. Belmore is widely respected in education and brings extensive experience in our district,” Board President Gloria Reyes said.

According to MMSD, Belmore has 20 years experience in Madison schools as both an administrator and consultant on education and early childhood development.

“As a board, we are unified in our commitment to our district’s vision, goals and core values – and the work outlined in our Strategic Framework. We are excited to have Jane lead that work forward, and we are eager to engage with our community through the next school year to select a permanent superintendent,” Reyes said.

MMSD said Belmore received her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as a professor and dean of the School of Education at Edgewood College.
