MADISON (WKOW) — Assembly Republicans passed their revisions to the state budget after nearly 10 hours of debate. The fate of passing this budget on time comes down to the Senate, as some GOP members are vowing to vote against it.
Sen. David Craig (R-Big Bend) and Sen. Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) have said they won’t support the budget over concerns of the level of spending and how transportation would be funded. Republicans cannot lose another vote, as long as all Democrats oppose it.
Republican Sen. Chris Kapenga said as of Tuesday he’s still not sure if he will vote in favor or against the spending plan. If the budget doesn’t pass, the Assembly will have to develop a new version that more Senate Republicans will vote for.
Lawmakers have until July 1st to pass a budget if not the current spending levels from the previous budget will continue. Governor Evers has yet to comment if he will veto the budget entirely, sign it or make changes.
