The two riders on a motorcycle killed Monday on Wisconsin Highway 69 north of Monroe have been identified as a husband and wife from Freeport, Illinois, according to the Green County Sheriff.
Gene W. Carroll, 71, and Cynthia L. Carroll, 72, died when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a truck forced into their lane by another crash.
The incident remains under investigation pending results of toxicology tests along with reports from the Wisconsin State Patrol reconstruction team.

UPDATE (WKOW) — Two motorcyclists died in a three-vehicle crash three miles north of Monroe on Highway 69 just before 3:30 p.m. Monday.
The Green County Sherrif’s Office said it is withholding the names of the motorcycle riders, both of whom are adults from Illinois, until family can be notified, Sheriff Jeff Skatrud said in a press release.
A pickup truck driven by Shane H. Olson, 49, of rural Monroe, stopped in the northbound lane south of County Highway FF to make a lefthand turn into a driveway when another truck, this one operated by Gary L. Grunder, 69, from Monticello, hit the rear Olson’s truck, forcing it into the southbound lane, Skatrud said.
A motorcycle with the two Illinois riders ran into Olson’s truck, forcing the bike into the ditch and throwing its occupants.
“Both of the motorcycle riders were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Green County Coroner,” Skatrud said. “It appeared that the passenger was wearing a helmet and the driver, eye protection. The motorcycle briefly caught on fire due to leaking gasoline, which was extinguished by a witness to the crash.”
Olson and his three passengers aged 3, 5 and 7 all reported no injuries. Green County EMS took Grunder to Monroe Clinic Hospital for unspecified injuries.
All three vehicles sustained extensive damage. The Green County Highway Department supplied barricades to detour traffic around the crash scene while the Wisconsin State Patrol reconstructed the crash and STH 69 will be closed for several hours until the on-scene investigation is completed, Skatrud said.
The Illinois riders were Green County’s second and third traffic fatalities of 2019.
