City tackles rat problem in Madison neighborhood

MADISON (WKOW) — Rats are causing a big problem in a Madison neighborhood.

Myrtle Street neighbors met with Public Health Madison and Dane County and the Parks Department to address the issue.

They talked about what the city has done so far to alleviate the problem, by clearing brush behind homes.

John Hausbeck is the Environmental Health Services Supervisor. He says, “We do recognize that they are a natural part of the ecosystem around here and what we are trying to avoid are situations that allow the populations to explode.”

The city is asking homeowners to make sure their properties are cleared of outdoor food sources for rats, that their grass is kept short and any wood is stacked off the ground.

They also emphasized that neighbors should help each other out.

Health officials put out an informational video with tips for people and you can find thathere.
