Wisconsin students show decrease in English and math skills

MADISON (WKOW) — Early Thursday morning, the Wisconsin Student Assessment System results were released, and they show a decrease in English and math skills for most students in Wisconsin.

The report shows percentages of how many students scored proficient or advanced for English or math.

From 2018-2019, 40.1% of students scored proficient or advanced for math, compared to 41.1% from 2017-2018.

In English, 39.3% of students scored proficient or advanced in 2018-2019, compared to 40.6% in 2017-2018.

Though there was a slight decrease in students overall, the state says math went up at some grade levels — and went up overall for Hispanic students and students learning English. Students at private schools showed small increases in improvement as well.
