UPDATE (WKOW) — The Dane County Medical Examiner has identified the man killed last Thursday in a hit-and-run crash on Northport Drive in Madison as Darrell Sunderlage, 60.
Police earlier identified the man as being form the village of Brooklyn, however the medical examiner’s office reported Tuesday that he had no current address.
Police are still looking for the driver.
The incident happened about 10 p.m. Sept. 12 in the 1700 block of Northport Drive.
“We’re looking at some type of possible homicide charge now,” Madison Police Spokesperson Joel DeSpain says.
A witness told police the man was hit by a black sedan, possibly a Toyota, which was traveling north at about 50 mph at the time of impact. It was raining at the time.
DeSpain says the victim was in a crosswalk at the time he was hit.
The victim was wearing dark clothing and landed around 35 yards from where he was struck, according to police.
The car that hit him should have significant front end damage. Madison police are seeking help in locating the vehicle and driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
“There were some small pieces of the vehicle that were found at the scene, we have those,” DeSpain notes, adding any new information might augment existing evidence. He says surveillance video of the collision area from the night of the incident is limited.
Several motorists spotted the Madison man’s body shortly after 10 p.m. in the roadway and stopped to come to his aid.
He was transported to a hospital with internal bleeding, a ruptured aorta and head trauma, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.
Dane County’s Medical Examiner has yet to release the victim’s name.
