Police say a 17-year-old student was shot and injured by police Monday morning after the student pointed a weapon at the officer at Waukesha South High School.
A school resource officer responded about 10:15 a.m. when told a student had a handgun at the school.
When the officer responded, he attempted to secure the classroom and get the other students to safety, Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said in a Tuesday afternoon news conference.
Waukesha police officers and sheriff’s deputies also responded, where they attempted to get the student to turn over the gun.
“The suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officers commands,” Jack said. “The suspect removed the handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. An officer was forced to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect.”
Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, Jack said.
The remaining students were evacuated from the classroom and the school was put on lockdown for about an hour.
