Veto override attempt fails in state Assembly NEW

Assembly Republicans failed Wednesday to override Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' veto of a bill that would make it easier to become a nurse's aide in Wisconsin.

The bill to override failed 63-36.

State law requires nurses' aide training programs to run at least 120 hours. Federal regulations, however, say training programs need to run at least 75 hours. The Republican-authored bill , which passed with bipartisan support, would have adopted the federal standard, saving nurse's aides 45 hours of training.

Evers vetoed the proposal in November, saying at the time that he objects to reduced training for those who care for Wisconsin's most vulnerable citizens and there are better ways to address the shortage of nurse's aides.
