Surrounded by educators and school administrators Thursday morning, Gov. Tony Evers announced he would call a special session to focus on education.
The session is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
The governor wants the state Senate and Assembly to use $250 million of projected revenue surplus to give more money to schools and take the pressure off of local referendums.
"I've always said that what's best for our kids is what's best for our state, and every kid deserves access to high-quality, public education regardless of their age, identity, background, economic status, or zip code," said Evers. "We don’t have to choose between investing in our kids and reducing property taxes—we can do both."
Evers signed an executive order directing the Legislature to meet in special session at a ceremony in the Governor's Conference Room.
This is the third special session the governor has called. The first two were designed to deal with gun control and helping struggling Wisconsin farms.
