Downtown fire causes $200k in damage, seven displaced

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Seven people are displaced after a fire in downtown Madison. The Madison Fire Department estimates the damage at $200,000, which took firefighters around 10 minutes to put out the flames once they got to the scene. Witnesses called 911 around 5:40 p.m., reporting flames and smoke on the porch.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison firefighters put out a blaze inside a house in downtown Madison Thursday evening.

The call for the fire in the 100 block of North Franklin Street came in at 5:41 p.m. and Madison firefighters responded, according to Dane County dispatchers.

Emergency crews reported that the fire is out. A cause has not yet been identified. An investigation will follow clean up work by firefighters.

Five people are displaced from the home which is divided into a two-unit flat. The Red Cross is responding to help those left homeless.

Responders said the first floor had extensive fire damage and the second floor endured smoke damage.
