Residents and pet escape safely from Portage house fire

No one was injured Wednesday morning when Portage firefighters and multiple other departments battled a blaze in the 900 block of Wisconsin Street, according to Columbia County dispatchers.

Firefighters were called about 9 a.m. and found heavy flames and smoke when they arrived, according to Portage Fire Chief Clayton Simonson Jr.

An adult, two children and a dog had already gotten out of the home by the time firefighters arrived. The Red Cross is assisting the three people displaced by the fire.

The firefighters couldn't get past the porch because of the flames, so they went into defensive mode, Simonson said.

It took them about an hour to get the fire under control. The crews extinguished the majority of the flames but are continuing to work to find hot spots.

Wisconsin Highway 16 was closed in both directions in Portage between James Street and W. Carroll Street.

The road was closed about 9 a.m., according to the Wisconsin DOT.
