Dane County gets hotel rooms for some homeless

The Dane County government announced it has rented 72 hotel rooms to increase social distancing measures among the area's homeless.

The rooms will be made available to homeless families and homeless people considered most at risk by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said $150,000 would be budgeted for the "72 hotel rooms and counting" as well as meals to feed people staying in them.

The announcement, made in a press release sent Thursday, said those qualifying could move in the same day.

"Dane County is committed to helping our most vulnerable residents receive the support and shelter they need during the novel coronavirus pandemic," Parisi. "Through these efforts, we hope to limit the spread of COVID-19 in families experiencing homelessness and individuals at risk of developing severe health complications."

The county is partnering with the City of Madison on the effort.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says they're identifying spaces in the area that can not only house homeless, but could be used for other things in a "worst-case scenario."
