Two injured when gunfire erupts downtown Madison

At least two people were injured by gunfire near downtown Madison Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the area of North Paterson Street and East Washington Avenue, according to a police incident report.

Police say several innocent people took cover when multiple shots rang out around 4:20 p.m.

Police say one of the two people hit by gunfire was an innocent man who happened to be walking nearby.

Witnesses told police they saw one man, who was on foot, firing at a car. Not long after, that car pulled up in front of the City-County Building, with one person inside who had been wounded. That person was taken to the hospital.

The suspect who fired at the car hasn't been found yet. Police say the other people in the care have been detained.

The Madison Police Department says the Violent Crimes Unit is taking the lead on the investigation.

The two people injured are expected to survive.
