Gov. Tony Evers released a clarification to his Safer at Home order Thursday that allows drive-up church services.
The March 25 order banned nonessential businesses and travel. The order listed churches as an essential service, but a March 17 directive from the governor banned gatherings of 10 or more people.
Both were in intended to curb the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on Wisconsin.
Many ministers and congregants were not sure how the two orders could be reconciled considering worship, especially on Sundays, is traditionally a communal affair.
The governor listed three possibilities for how churches can continue offering service:
- Parking lots with congregants staying in cars, avoiding person-to-person contact
- Streaming online
- Having small gatherings (fewer than 10 people in each room) with multiple services.
The Department of Health Services has set upan informational webpagedevoted to community and faith-based organizations attempting to navigate the pandemic.
The Safer at Home order remains in effect until April 24 unless otherwise extended.
